Tarot Card Meanings with Benebell is going to be an educational video series covering the 78 keys or cards of the tarot, showcasing the distinct attributions for four different deck systems: the TdM, the RWS, the Thoth, and my own deck, the SKT.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Here are my objectives for the course:

(1) Facilitate familiarity of the TdM, RWS, Thoth, and SKT so you become proficient at reading any and all of the four systems,

(2) Offer a card by card primer designed to help memory retention of the key meanings in a more visually engaging way than studying them out of a book, and

(3) Supplement your course work with Holistic Tarot (North Atlantic Books, 2015).

COURSE FORMAT

The series will be designed for visual learners. The video format also benefits auditory learners. However, if reading comprehension is what you need to help with retention of what you’re studying, then turn on the Closed Captioning for the video. You will also be able to read the written transcript of each installment.

The videos themselves will try to stay on topic, i.e., only focus on the card meanings and attributions. I’m also trying to be wary of video length, so I will have to leave out a lot of details and aspects. My hope is you are supplementing these videos with a trusty tarot reference book (or multiple books…) and so the general overview these video lectures offer will suffice.

Each video installment will come paired with a written post where I can add insights that I believe are important as you develop your understanding of the card attributions, but might be a little “off topic” and so I didn’t want to address it directly in the video.

Jung and Tarot

The Tarot, a deck of seventy-eight cards, occupies a niche in Western mysticism and divination akin to that of the I Ching in the East. Long considered simply a superstitious system of “fortune telling,” the Tarot is largely ignored in academic circles and is often met with disdain in clinical circles. This is unfortunate, since the structure of the Tarot and its use in divination mirrors the structure and dynamics of the psyche as understood in Jungian psychology.

Among Jungians, the study of divination systems, such as the I Ching, Astrology, and the Tarot, is considered just another aspect of the study of the mind. Analytical Psychology’s consideration of these systems is predicated on Jung’s understanding of synchronicity. Events that occur in rapid succession or simultaneously in space/time can be understood not only through possible causal relationships, but also by investigating the meaning that arises in the psyche of the percipient when confronting these events. Divination systems, including the Tarot, may be thought of as means of invoking synchronicity, rather than waiting for synchronistic events to occur.

In this class, participants will examine the divination system of Tarot cards from the perspective of synchronicity and will explore the use of the Tarot to investigate questions of interest. Several simple ways of reading the cards will be presented, and students will have an opportunity to receive guidance in reading the Tarot from a Jungian perspective through coaching and peer practice. All participants are expected to bring their own deck of Tarot cards, preferably the Rider-Waite deck, available at many stores and through internet retailers such as Amazon.

Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this program, participants will be able to:

1) Explain the major and minor arcana and their relationship to the personal and collective unconscious.
2) Use the Tarot as a means of active imagination, to better understand their own process of individuation.
3) Describe the relationship of the Tarot to synchronicity, and the value of divination for enhancing an appreciation of life experience.

Dr. James maintains a private practice in Chicago, Illinois.  His areas of expertise include dream work and psychoanalysis, archetypal dimensions of analytic practice, divination and synchronicity, and ways to sustain the vital relationship between body, mind and spirit.  He has done post-doctoral work in music therapy, the Kabbalah, spirituality and theology, and uses these disciplines to inform his work as a Jungian analyst.

A Jungian Approach to Tarot Divination 

Introduction

This course will examine the Tarot through the lens of Jungian psychology to understand the inner processes and structure of the psyche. This course will examine the Major and Minor Arcana of the Tarot to amplify the Jungian concepts of personal unconscious, collective unconscious, the Self, persona, anima and animus amongst others. These terms will be explained throughout the course.

This course will also explore how to use the symbols and images of the Tarot to gain a deeper understanding about the development of ego-personality as an adaptation to our inner and outer worlds, and to develop the skills to self-reflect on our habits of thinking, feeling and doing. We look at other people and think we know them, just as we look at ourselves and think we know who we are, but by consulting the Tarot through the lens of Jungian psychology we can come to know ourselves in a more fundamental way. We meet ourselves in the Tarot.

During the course participants will also explore the divinatory and oracular powers of the Tarot using Jung’s concept of synchronicity.

In between classes participants will be given various course work to do to deepen their understanding and insights of the arcana: starting a Tarot journal, using various practice spreads, exploring the elements with the 4 suits of the Minor Arcana, and using active imagination to understand the creativity of the Tarot symbols and images.

Consulting the Tarot is to consciously enter the transpersonal realm as the Tarot is concerned with patterns of consciousness. This makes the Tarot an ideal guide in the journey towards Individuation, Jung’s term for becoming psychologically whole. 

Helen Reddin has worked with the Tarot for over 30 years and has an in-depth understanding of its esoteric and psychological significance as well as its practical application to our personal lives. Helen is a regular contributor to lectures for the C.G. Jung Centre and has facilitated workshops in Ireland, Wales, and Germany on the Tarot and on the Celtic Magical Tradition.

Class 1: The Tarot and the structure of the Psyche

Contents include:

Structure of the psyche according to Jungian psychology i.e. ego personality, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious and how they relate to the structure of Tarot as the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana including the Court Cards.

Brief history of the Tarot and Rider Waite Smith deck.

Course work: Single card reading each day. Starting a Tarot Journal. 

 

Class 2: Major Arcana

Contents include:

Jung’s theory of Synchronicity and Divination

Introduction to the 22 Major Arcana.

Course work: Major Arcana exercise - choosing your birth year card.

 

Class 3: Minor Arcana and the personal unconscious

Contents include:

Introduction to the 4 suits of the Minor Arcana. How they relate to the 4 elements and the 4 functions of Jungian typology.

Jung’s theory of the complexes.

Active imagination.

Course work: 4 Elements exercise. Continuing daily card reading and journaling.

 

Class 4: The Court Cards, the Anima and Animus, and exploring the elements in more depth.

Contents include:

Introduction to the Court cards as characters within our psyche, Masculine and Feminine qualities within us.

Jung’s Anima and Animus.

Further exploration of the 4 Elements.

What are symbols? How do they relate to our inner work?

Course work: Minor Arcana exercise.

 

Class 5: Spreads, Layouts, and Readings Part 1

Contents include:

Ethics of reading for another.

Setting up, reversal cards, choosing extra cards. 

Using a significator, the question, the querant, the reader.

1st layout - the 3-card spread - Past Present Future.

2nd layout - The Celtic Cross spread Part 1.

Transcendent Function and the Self.

Course work: Practice doing 3-card layouts during the week, we will take examples in the next class.

Class 6: Spreads, Layouts, and Readings Part 2

Contents include:

Examples of 3 card readings in class

Continuation of Celtic Cross spread – the staff.

3rd layout - The Dream spread.

Choosing a Tarot deck.

At the end of the course, participants will:

• Have an understanding of the structure of the Tarot deck as a reflection of the structure of the psyche.

• Know how to lay and begin to read 3 different spreads.

• Have a working knowledge of basic Jungian concepts such as archetype, complex, synchronicity, personal unconscious and collective unconscious, the Self, synchronicity.

• Understand how to use the Tarot as a guide to the inner processes.

• Feel more at home in the world of symbol and metaphor.

• Gain an understanding of how to work with the 4 Elements with the support of the Minor Arcana.

• Understand synchronicity and divination as activations of another order of reality.

• Have begun a Tarot journal.

Participants are asked to have a Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck to use for the duration of the course and to have a notebook to journal in.

 I hear you asking, “A Jung Platform course on the Tarot? What has that to do with Jungian Psychology?

Jung explored a wide array of psychological concepts, including divination and its companion, synchronicity. Rather than viewing this with surprise, it is helpful to recognize Jung’s vast and diverse interests, which extended to alchemy, flying saucers, and discussions of religion, soul, and spirit. 

Central to his vision was the unconscious, a vast reservoir of challenges and solutions to life’s problems. 

He identified two layers within the unconscious: 

the personal unconscious, containing unprocessed material from an individual’s own life, and 

the collective unconscious, a deeper layer holding universal elements shared by all humans simply by virtue of being alive. Jung called these universal contents archetypes—primordial patterns or symbols shaping thought, behavior, and creativity across cultures and time. By integrating the personal and collective dimensions of the unconscious, Jung created a profound and comprehensive framework for understanding human growth and healing.

Self-knowledge can be achieved through a deep exploration of one’s personal history and by reflecting on life using the tools of Jungian psychology. 

These tools include dreamwork, recognizing projections, displacements, somatizations, and synchronicities. 

Among these, divination practices such as the I Ching and Tarot stand out as unique examples of synchronistic experiences. Jung wrote extensively on the I Ching and mentioned the Tarot as a symbolic system capable of revealing insights about one’s life journey that may not be accessible through other means.

Jung emphasized that every situation, especially those marked by suffering, has both a cause rooted in the past and a purpose guiding the individual toward a future resolution. He referred to this forward pull as the “telos,” derived from the Greek word τέλος, meaning “end, purpose, or goal.” Originally a concept of Aristotelian causality, Jung adapted it to signify the psychological goal of resolving suffering and uncovering its deeper meaning.

The telos of an event suggests that all experiences are moving toward a future goal or purpose. 

For Jung, the process of individuation—psychological growth and healing—required not only understanding the historical roots of suffering but also accepting that suffering serves a purpose. It guides the individual toward a future state where the pain can be relieved and integrated into a larger, meaningful whole. Jung believed that any tool aiding this process, including divination, could have profound relevance in fostering self-awareness and growth within Jungian analysis.

Ken James

Kenneth James, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Chicago, Illinois. He received a Ph.D. in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University, and a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Along the way, he studied vocal music at the American Conservatory of Music, and learned a modality of music therapy known as The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music at the Institute for Consciousness and Music in Baltimore, Maryland.

In the second module, we will explore the structure and dynamics of the psyche from a Jungian perspective and examine the ways the Tarot reflects these elements. 

We will also explore the relationships between synchronicity and the Tarot through readings and discussion. Direct instruction in doing “vertical” and “horizontal” three-card readings, including the Past-Present-Future spread, the Overview-Challenge-Action spread (horizontal) and the Conscious-Issue-Unconscious, and the Issue/Challenge-Internal and External Resources spread (vertical), will be given. A four-card Body-Mind-Spirit-Action reading will also be presented. Opportunities for guided practice in using these spreads will be included, and a “lab” session will be provided for small groups of participants to read for each other with input from the teacher. Assignments for the upcoming month will be given.

In the third module, we will study the Jungian concept of the Transcendent Function. We will look at Jung’s definitions of the transcendent function and explore how the Tarot can be understood as an example of the activity of the transcendent function. We will also examine Jung’s teachings on psychological types, and how typology can be integrated with the Tarot. The relationship between the intuitive function and consulting the Tarot cards will be examined. We will also discuss the role of the “question” in the context of a Tarot reading, as well as explore the difficulties and benefits in formulating meaningful and open questions. The Celtic Cross, a foundational spread in the world of Tarot, will be presented, and opportunities to read the “cross” portion of the Celtic Cross will be provided in the large group and in smaller “breakout” groups, with the teacher’s input. A discussion regarding the ethics involved in Tarot work will be initiated, which will be continued in subsequent sessions. We will also have another lab session. Assignments for the upcoming month will be given.

In the fourth module, we will continue learning how to use the full ten-card Celtic Cross spread in work with clients. There will be opportunities for demonstration and practice. We will also engage in an in-depth exploration of the Major Arcana, including controversies that have been part of the historical analysis of the Major Arcana. The relationship between the Major Arcana and the paths on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life will be covered. Also, guidelines and examples for the upcoming Tarot Salon assignment will be presented, in this fourth module. Continued discussion on ethics and practical aspects of reading Tarot for clients will be held. Assignments for the upcoming month will be given.

In modules 5-7, each participant will present two Tarot readings that they have given to clients/friends outside the program. These presentations will be evaluated by the instructor according to a set of rubrics given in class. Each reading will include a three-card spread and a Celtic Cross spread. These Salon reading presentations will consist of three parts.

Part One: A brief, general, and non-identifying description of the querent, including age level, gender, previous experience of the client with Tarot, either as a reader or a querent, and a description of the question or concern that the querent brought to the reading.

Part Two: A listing of the cards that appeared in each spread. If possible, a photograph of each spread would be helpful.

Part Three: A description of how the reading progressed. This can be an exact transcript of the reading, or a prose description of your interpretations of the cards and the responses from the querent. If you received any feedback from the querent, include that in your presentation.

Following each presentation, the rest of the group will have opportunities to ask questions about the reading, and to offer other reflections about the interaction. This discussion portion of the presentation is not evaluative, but participatory in a helpful and positive way.

In this final module of the certificate program, participants will explore the use of other Tarot decks as a means of amplifying the deck(s) you are most comfortable using. The differences between Tarot decks and other oracle decks will be considered, and the practice of combining Tarot and other oracles will be explored. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite decks to the live session of this module, and there will be opportunities to show the deck and discuss why it numbers among each participant’s favorite set of decks.

Evaluation of Tarot Reading skills

• Presentation of two clients’ or friends’ readings in a Tarot Salon session will be viewed as a demonstration of each participant’s competency in Tarot reading.
• Get 3 peer reviews of tarot reader competency list and a self-evaluation. The competency list will be shared with you during the course.

In this short course, we will study the Tarot, a seventy-eight-card deck used for divination and as the foundation for an esoteric version of Jung’s active imagination technique. Participants will be instructed on the complex structure of the Tarot and its correlation with Analytical Psychology’s theories regarding the structure and function of the psyche.

We will elaborate on the use of the Tarot for divination, scrutinizing its relationship with the concept of synchronicity. Further, we will delve into the Major and Minor Arcana, evaluating their collective and personal unconscious representation, respectively.

This course will also illuminate the connection between the Transcendent Function and the utilization of Tarot cards to augment intuitive comprehension of internal and external dynamics. Participants will be guided in executing a three-card reading addressing a particular issue, with practical demonstrations provided within the class for better understanding.

It is recommended that each participant come prepared with a Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck, as this deck will be the foundation of class discussions and sample readings. The rationale behind this specific deck selection will be elucidated during the course. This endeavor will provide participants with an enriched understanding of the Tarot's role in divination, the study of psyche, and personal introspection.

 

 

Kenneth James, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Chicago. He is the founder and director of The Soulwork Center, dedicated to facilitating the process of individuation according to the teachings of C.G. Jung and other contributors to the field of Analytical Psychology. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Along the way, he studied voice at the American Conservatory of Music and music therapy at the Institute for Consciousness and Music in Baltimore. He also completed four years of post-doctoral study in theology and scripture at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He has taken lay ordination in Zen Buddhism and has studied the Kabbalah with a Lubavitcher rabbi in Chicago.

Ken’s studies of the Tarot began at an early age when he was introduced to the notion of divination by an elderly aunt from Scotland. He has led workshops around the world on the relationship between divination and synchronicity, and on the use of the Tarot to explore the unconscious. The synthesis of Jungian thought, clinical practice, and the numinous has been a strong motif throughout his career.
